Our dealer normally has cycle repair kits.
But, if you're talking 3 sections from the head, that's a tough place to repair, it's already doubled up there. If you're talking 3 sections from the far end, that's no big deal. In a pinch, I've actually welded the cycle, then welded a section in, as in, weld the sections together too. It's not perfect, but it will hold for a while.

I run the SCH cutting system on both of our heads. What I've done in the past is to move the cutterbar in towards the wobble box and put the splice on the right hand end. Don't know how the IH system is made or if that is even possible. SCH makes a really good splice kit, its actually the splice thats used to join the 10' sections of cutterbar together and it works slick too.

We broke our 820 22.5 a few years back on the left side in the middle of harvest. Rather than waiting for a new one we took it out and welded it and then drilled the hole back in there. It hasn't broke yet but you really have to watch that bearing on the end, once they start hammering it don't take long to break. I think they could have come up with a better idea that the two roller bearings. I hope the new ones are better!!

Tommy, The new CIH 30' sickle come in three pieces. Your friend might try one of the splice kits that CIH sells to put splice those together. They come with allen head bolts that are suppose to be extra hard. We have never had one of the splice kits fail.
Even with a splice kit I would move the repair to the far end to relieve stress.
I have welded broken sickle bars in the past with moderate success. Usually the break is in a hole so you don't end up with a lot of weld holding it. Best luck I have had welding is to cut out the broken area & put in a short piece so the welds are between holes.
