Ok. So I brought my farmall M back from school awhile back and a couple weeks ago i've been going to work on it now and then, but now I can't seem to get it running. It didn't run the best at school, so I wanted to really tune her up before I started sandblasting and painting.

So lets start her up and play with the timing /fuel mix......

Wouldn't start... <_<

Ok....so...no spark... <_<

Ok......condencer? <_< no.....points? no. <_< coil? no :wacko:

Ok.....well I guess i haven't changed the spark plugs yet......nothing.... :blink:

So.....now I am down to the distributer cap and rotor....I am getting juice to the cap, but not to the plug wires(brand new rotor and dist cap)

And as funny as it may seem, I can get the spark plugs to fire going backwards (counter-clockwise) but not forward.(clockwise) This only happens when I stop cranking the engine and the dist. backs up a bit. (i've acually gotten it to backfire a couple times on accident)

And now I'm asking you guys for help.

I can't take much of this anymore...this coupled with starter problems (which I had rebuilt and still doesn't work sometimes) I feel like I'm going to pull my hair out!!!

Before I put the electric ign. on most of my tractors i had a running tractor and put in new points and it would not start . Samething with power to the dist. and even spark at the points. Rub emery cloth between points and I bet she will run unless your starter is taking all the power have had that problem too.

Let's start with the obvious stuff-clean points? I like a little nail file for this task. Even if they look clean, give them a swipe or two to get any fuzz that may be there off them.

Now, be sure your points are set @ .020.

I went through this very same thing today on my H-ran poorly (occasional stumble, didn't like throttle changes, etc), and I found two things-one, the coil wire end was bad, and two, the points were a little burnt and overgapped-new end on the coil wire and clean and readjust the points, and she was happily discing all day long.

Be sure to check for bushing wear on distributor shaft. I generaly set cam so that points are open, then push and pull shaft gently towards and away from points. If there is any wear the points will move enough that it can be seen. When engin turns backward it probably changes the point setting.

Put an electronic ignition in it and be done with it. Seems like I am always messing with the points, condensers, & spark plugs in my old tractors that still have them. Those that I have converted over always seem to start right up & run better,

Could also be the insulator from the coil wire through the distributor onto the points/condensor.

The coil wire should throw a spark to the engine block as you crank the engine over with it disconnected from the distributor.

If that's working, but you're not getting anything out of the distributor cap, then your rotor isn't turning, or the rotor and cap are really cheap knockoffs.

Find TDC on the front cylinder. Remove the distributor cap. The rotor should be pointing at the #1 tower. If not crank the engine over and see if the rotor even turns.

It wouldn't be the first time the gear stripped or wore out on one of these distributors. All the electronic ignitions in the world won't help you.

From my conclusions everything is working ok except the rotor/dist cap. If I plug in a spark plug wire straight into the coil it sparks good. (and obviously too fast) But as soon as I try it with the cap and rotor it doesn't work. idk....Im going over right now to try some more things, so we'll see and I'll keep you posted.

Don't discount the new parts being bad out of the box either!! Put the old cap and rotor back on and see if it fires.
