I just finished putting the turbo on the 856. I am really happy with the finished job but wow was it more expensive than I thought! After totaling all the receipts, it was right at 2k in receipts no labor!!! Anyway, I am looking forward to some heavy disking this spring.

Dumb question? If the 856 and the 1456 have the 407 engine, does a turbo crank the 856 up to the 1456? How well does the rest of the 856 hold up with the increased HP?

Similar to Reapers question: can you describe the parts list? Did you use an aftermarket setup or one off a 1256? I am interested in doing the same.

I spoke with a guy who owns an F856 and he installed a turbo and used his same uncut hood, so he said. thx Paul

I don't think adding a turbo will get a 856 to crank out what a 1456 does, without messing w/ the pump. Should make it almost like a 1256, though. The 4 roller pump on a 1456 gives it just a lil more edge than a 2 roller pump on the 856 or 1256.

Looks like a very clean, well done installation.

Thats a great looking 856! Ours has a M&W turbo kit on it. Was on it when we bought it so I really don't know much about it other than it works. I think you'll love the way the tractor runs and pulls. Might want to think about a pyrometer, if you haven't already.

Hello all , The hole in my hood had to be moved when turboed but mine is an 856 Custom model so it's hood is different to begin with B) . That is a very nice looking 856  . Boomer

Thanks for the comments on the install.

My friend, who is a 1,000 acre farmer, and one of the best IH mechanics in middle TN did the work. For him, the install was easy and he is really talented.

We bought the turbo kit from Bates. It included hood, air cleaner, turbo, manifold, piping, and all related parts except 2 rubber hoses. It came from a 1456. The oil cooler came off an industrial 1456 and it came separately. We chose to upgrade the the oil cooler and filter base due to the higher operating temperature. Right at 2k. However, there we a few misc. parts, bolts, etc., were ordered locally. I wanted a new screen and that was @$90 from CaseIH!! I also got a new pre-cleaner bowl off the web because the one in the kit was damaged.

The fuel tank is original and did not require any work.

We have not had it dynoed yet but will soon. I am very interested to know how much power it is generating. What Nebraska says about the 4 roller pump makes sense but it is more powerful than a good 1456 that we have use of locally.

My friend has done 3 of these in the last 10 years and all three are working tractors. We kept the fuel turned to factory specs. We feel that helps keep extra power issues from turning into other issues. The 856 seems to handle the extra power with ease given 10 years of history. They are all worked but well kept.

I had this 856 completely overhauled last year. Everything, everything, was gone through. it is a beast!!!!!
