IH hit miss engine

my husband has been given a engine and is wanting to paint it. he has gotten it to run. while searching for info i found this forum. we would appreciate if someone could help us out, as i am unable to find information, or a picture of what engine should look like restored.
here is what it says on engine

1 1/2 to 2 1/2 h.p. type-la-engine
300-500 r.p.m. pulley speed
made in the usa by international harvester company
chicago illinios
patent pending no.laa29555

The 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hp LA engines were first built in 1934. Your serial number would be from early 1937. Early ones were gray with red flywheel, pulley and pinstripe. Starting in '39 they were all red. In '41 they were superceded with the LB engine.

It is not a hit and miss engine, it is governor/throttle controlled.

There is a 3 page article in the current Red Power Magazine. If you are not a subscriber, you can get the issue by contacting the publisher using information on another page of this site.
