My nicer 782 was run without proper air filteration at some time in its past and the engine got "dusted". It burns lots of oil but runs very smooth. I am debating the merits of a Honda repower over a rebiuld or Kohler replacement. Any intellegent thought about this out there?

that engine can be expensive to rebuild, maybe look at getting a kohler command engine if you are going to replace it, the command engine is a v-twin with over head valves, will have to do some fabrication but it will be alot better engine than the kohler magnum
i own a restored 1971 1466,one of the first off the line open station,a 1206,open station,#8917. plus restored cub cadet's 86,108,129, and a 1710,(not restored),782 w/3pt an just got a 149 hydraulic lift and 3pt.just got a 1210 w/44" deck
Either make excuses or make an effort and find a way, one makes things better, the other does not.

Is the KT kohler a series 1 or 2 with oil filter? If it is series one without pressure lube I would concider the honda conversion or M-18 kohler. Because the engines were great mowing flat but on hill sides which ever piston was up hill gets starved for oil and makes a window in the block in due time. If series 2 with pressure lube I would try a rebuild it since it only burns oil and runs smooth. You may be able to get away with just honing the cylinder and new rings? But you can only tell when open it up. I do know parts are expensive for the KT-17 kohlers. Another thing guys are doing is installing the Magnum kohlers M-18 only difference is electronic ignition ane full pressure lube. I believe most internal parts interchange. The engines look identical from a quick qlance.

Did not know the command would work. I know they are good. I believe thats what the 1541 cub cadet has in it that my grandfather has?!

ernest, the cub i mow with is a 1710 with a series 2 the 782 i just got last summer had a series one in it and the ran it out of oil, i talked to the guys at our other store and they said to put a command in it, it will work but you do have to do some fabrication, cant remember what. but they lost a tractor off the back of one of the delivery trucks and i got the engine out of it, and put in the 782, its a series two 18hp, with oil filter, almost wish my 1710 had an oil filter. the put in a 15hp command in a 482 they did a nice job on it.

The 1541 had a M18 Magnum. I think I heard once that they put a different carburetor on it to derate it from 18hp to 15 hp. My grandmother has one, it's a good tractor only hard to start when cold.

I did a 22hp command about 2 yrs ago on a 782. Runs good when it starts. Takes a little cranking to start those kohler commands. I have asked a few lawnmower mechanics about the long cranking - yep they start hard.

If i would do it again, i would try the 18hp v-twin honda. I sure like how our honda pressure washers starts.

Here is a link of where I got my kit.

The small engine warehouse is the place I was looking. Seems like a good deal. Ordered one, hope this is the right decision. I just know that the Kohler is not going to hang on a rebiuld stand in my shop.

I put a kohler replacement KT17 I believe is the number in mine after the rod went through the original non oiler engine. This one has remote filter that I mounted in front. I am happy with it and have almost 300hrs on it since changeout, and everything bolted in just like the old one. The new engine might have 18hp I cant remember, but I use a 50" deck on it and I had to mow my pasture of a yard yesterday and it worked fine in that tall stuff.

This same question was just asked on one of the Cub Cadet forums. Here is my statement posted there............."Don't get the Honda from S.E.W. In a few years when they switch to the next "great buy" they get (like in the past) the Honda won't be supported by them for parts. Your CCC dealer definately won't know ANYTHING about it either......Buy from an American Company, Buy Kohler!"

I wonder how long it'll be before MTD riders(cub cadet, troybilt, yard man, etc) get Honda engines. They already use honda engines for some of their push mowers, along with Kawasaki. in fact, those are the only 2 engine makers that cub cadet pushmowers use, according to their web site.

You want a good engine, get a honda or Kawasaki. The Honda will probably cost more, but neither are cheap, and both are good engines.
Where I work, we sell & fix any & everything. The new kohler's are crap! If you want American, buy a Briggs. Good engine, less $$$ than honda or Kawasaki.
I've got an old Cub Cadet 129 with a 12 HP Kohler. I love that mower. I can flog the piss out of it and it just keeps coming back for more. But I wouldn't buy a new mower w/ a Kohler.
